London: grand stations, river walks and free museums
A great city that rewards walking.

London is best on foot. Walk the river, duck into a free museum when it rains, and save the evenings for the theatre.
When to go
May to September for long days and the parks at their best. December for the lights and the markets. Rain is possible any day, so pack for it.
How long
Four to six days, plus a day trip if you can. Stay central, near a Tube line you will use every day.

St Pancras and King's Cross
The Victorian Gothic of St Pancras is worth a visit even if you are not catching a train. From here the Eurostar reaches Paris in about two and a half hours, an easy day trip or a second city for the same holiday.

The South Bank
Walk the river from the London Eye to Tower Bridge, past theatres, galleries and food markets. Cross back over the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's.
Free museums
The British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern and the Natural History Museum are all free to enter. Go early or late to beat the crowds.

Good to know
- Tap a contactless card or your phone on the Tube and buses; daily fares are capped.
- For West End shows, look for day seats and same-day offers.
